I mentioned this nugget to a business prospect a few days ago and thought you's like to hear of it as well. In the year 2000, I helped develop a fast and lean piece of web technology called the Portal (think my.yahoo.com). The product was the fastest and one of the very early enterprise web technologies around. in 2001, Yahoo! came offered us a sweet partnership deal; one that would have given us access to rich content and an applications focus that the market really needed (in hindsight).
No one on my team (myself included) really understood the value and we ignored the opportunity. We all stayed happy believing ours was the fastest engine in town. Later a small company called Plumtree came from behind, with an much inferior product but it had a solutions focused. Suffice to say they did very well and later got purchased by BEA and Oracle. Our product on the other hand died a natural death. As a lead engineer and later the product manager, it still hurts me to know how we squandered a great opportunity. I promised myself never to let such a strategic mistake again under my watch. The blunder made way for my journey to become a sales executive down the line.
